@#Introduction: Dental caries and impaired salivary function are very common but undertreated. The aim of this study was to investigate the oral health status and salivary parameters of stroke patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 54 stroke and 54 non-stroke patients attending rehabilitation treatment at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Decay, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index and plaque scores were used to evaluate patients’ oral health. Salivary parameters such as salivary cortisol, salivary flow rate, pH and buffering capacity were measured. Salivary cortisol was analysed using Cobas E6000 automated immunoassay. Results: Among the 54 stroke patients, the majority were Malays 72.2% and 63.0% were male, with a mean age of 48.1 (14) years. There was a significant difference of dental caries between stroke patients, at 17.6 (4.26), compared to 15.7 (5.38) for non-stroke patients (p=0.042). Only 53.7% of stroke patients had good oral hygiene, compared to, 85.2% among non-stroke patients’ (p-value= 0.001). Salivary parameters showed no significant differences (p>0.05). However salivary cortisol levels were higher in stroke patients 5.2(5.1) nmol/L) than in non-stroke patients 4.0 (3.6) nmol/L). There was no significant correlation between salivary parameters and DMFT index (P>0.05). Conclusion: Stroke patients had more dental caries and poor oral hygiene compared to non-stroke patients. Salivary parameters showed no significant difference between stroke and non-stroke patients.

Background: Stress is a non?specific response of the body to any demand. Professional education has a certain level of stress inherent in it. Dental students have been reported in the literature to experience more stress than medical students. Objective: To evaluate the stress levels of dental students: first?year undergraduates, house surgeons, and final?year postgraduates, using salivary cortisol as a stress biomarker. Materials and Methods: Dental students above 18 years of age and without any systemic illness were included in the study. Those students with a drug history of corticosteroids, anti?depressants, and oral contraceptives were excluded from the study. Female participants experiencing pre?menstrual symptoms, pregnancy, and familial stressor issues were excluded from the study. First?year undergraduates, house surgeons, and final?year postgraduates were enrolled in the study. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected in the morning and evening between 9:00 and 10:00 am and between 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Salivary cortisol levels were assessed by chemiluminescence immuno?assay (CLIA). Results: Paired sample t?test was used to compare the diurnal variation among morning and afternoon samples within the groups. The salivary cortisol levels were found to be significant within the groups. One?way ANOVA was used to compare the salivary cortisol levels between the groups. The salivary cortisol levels within the groups were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Salivary cortisol is a non?invasive biomarker of stress. Postgraduates had higher salivary cortisol levels than other study groups.

We aimed to investigate the effects of job stress on the biochemical variables of schoolteachers before and after stress reduction strategies. In 2019, 200 schoolteachers (98 males, 102 females) in the private and fully aided higher secondary schools of urban and rural areas in Vellore, India were enrolled in the study based on the principle of consecutive sampling. Questionnaires were used to investigate demographic characteristics and occupational stress-related factors. Fasting blood glucose was detected by venous plasma and a biochemical analyser with the cut-off thresholds method. Salivary cortisol was determined by the specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit method. Total cholesterol in serum was determined by the CHOD-PAP method. Serumalbumin was detected by the bromocresol green dye-binding method on a Roche Modular DP analyser (Roche Diagnostics). Blood pressure was measured by aneroid sphygmomanometers. Levels of fasting blood glucose, salivary cortisol, albumin and cholesterol were lower in the high-tension group than those in the low-tension group. Those of the high-coping strategy group were higher than those of the low-coping strategy group. Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure significantly reduced among the intervention groups after administering the relaxation response programme for three and six weeks, respectively, to urban and rural school teachers. Occupational stress can lead to increased salivary cortisol, cholesterol, albumin, blood glucose and blood pressure levels. The relaxation response programme resulted in quantifiable improvements in physiological markers of stress in rural and urban schoolteachers.

Background Female office workers are prone to fatigue due to work and life stress. The natural environment has a positive effect on health, but little research has focused on the effects of forest therapy on physical and mental health of female office workers. Objective To explore the effect of forest therapy on the mental health of fatigued female office workers. Methods In this study, two environments, urban and forest, were selected. A total of 12 subjects with fatigue were recruited and randomly divided into two groups, urban and forest, six subjects in each group, with mean ages of 24.7 and 28.4 years, respectively, all of whom were company employees. The Brief Mood Scale, the Chinese version of Stress Self-Rating Scale, and the Fatigue Self-Rating Scale were distributed to assess baseline psychological indexes of mood, fatigue, and stress status. Higher scores indicate higher levels of negative mood, fatigue, and stress, respectively. The forest group participated in an on-site experiment using forest therapy (forest walks and sits in a forest environment), and the urban group followed the same schedule as the forest group conducting walks and sits in an urban environment. Salivary cortisol was used as the physiological index. Baseline physiological indices were collected on the first day of the experiment, and the on-site forest therapy experiment and collecting physiological and psychological indices were conducted on the second day; physiological indices were collected in the morning before the walk and physiological and psychological indices were collected after the walk, physiological indices were collected in the afternoon before and during the sitting, and psychological indices were collected after the sitting. Subjects' mood and fatigue status were followed up one week after the activity. Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed rank test were used to assess the changes of the indicators. Results As to the physiological indicator, the salivary cortisol concentrations before and after the morning walk in the forest group were lower than the corresponding baseline values (both P=0.043); and the decreases were 2.21 and 1.86 nmol·L−1 respectively. Differences between groups showed a trend towards a greater decrease in salivary cortisol concentrations in the forest group than in the urban group after walking and at the 15 th min of sitting (both P=0.068). Among the mood indicators, the forest group showed a greater decrease than the urban group in fatigue dimension after walking (P=0.065) and after sitting (P=0.024); the forest group showed a greater decrease than the urban group in vitality dimension after walking (P=0.054) and after sitting (P=0.045); and the forest group showed a greater decrease than the urban group in "total mood disorder" after sitting (P=0.054). Among the fatigue indicators, the forest group showed a greater decrease in "physical fatigue", "mental fatigue", "consequences of fatigue", and "general fatigue" after walking and sitting than the urban group (all P<0.05). Among the stress indicators, there were not statistically significance of "tension", "loss of control", and "total stress score" between the two groups after sitting (both P>0.05). After one week after the activity, there were not statistically significant differences of mood and fatigue between the two groups (both P>0.05). Conclusion Forest therapy has a regulating effect on symptoms of negative mood, and fatigue in fatigued female office workers, but the effects of a short-term forest therapy last for a limited duration.

The jaguar is the largest feline in the Americas and in the face of the threat of extinction and the reduction of natural areas, keeping the species in captivity may be important for its conservation. This condition can lead to a reduction in well-being, especially due to spatial limitation and lack of environmental stimulus. In recent decades, techniques have been sought to minimize the negative impacts of captivity, with an increase in the use of environmental enrichment and operational conditioning in order to facilitate routine procedures for the animal management. In this scenario, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of conditioning on the welfare of jaguars in captivity, analyzing behavioral and physiological effects through salivary cortisol. Seven jaguars were studied in a Scientific Breeder. There was an increase in behaviors associated with welfare and cortisol during conditioning, possibly related to learning. The increase in behaviors associated with welfare suggests that the technique can contribute to improve the quality of life of these animals in captivity.(AU)


A onça-pintada é o maior felino das Américas e, diante da ameaça de extinção e da redução de áreas naturais, manter a espécie em cativeiro pode ser importante para sua conservação. Essa condição pode levar à redução no bem-estar, especialmente devido à limitação espacial e à carência de estímulos ambientais. Nas últimas décadas, têm sido buscadas técnicas para minimizar os impactos negativos do cativeiro, com crescimento da utilização de enriquecimento ambiental e do condicionamento operante, com o intuito de facilitar procedimentos de rotina do manejo dos animais. Nesse cenário, o presente estudo teve por finalidade avaliar os efeitos do condicionamento sobre o bem-estar de onças-pintadas em cativeiro, analisando-se efeitos comportamentais e fisiológicos por meio do cortisol salivar. Foram estudadas sete onças-pintadas em um criadouro científico. Houve aumento dos comportamentos associados ao bem-estar e do cortisol durante o condicionamento, possivelmente relacionados à aprendizagem. O aumento nos comportamentos de bem-estar sugere que a técnica pode contribuir para melhorar a qualidade de vida desses animais em cativeiro.(AU)

This study aimed atassessingthe physical activitylevel, heart rate and the salivary cortisol level of football society players.The sample consisted of 19 male mastersfootballplayerswith an average age of 56.7±3.9 years. The long form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)andPolar®heart rate monitors were usedas instruments, in additionto Salivette® tubes to measure salivary cortisol. Data analysis was performed by using the repeated measuresAnalysis of Variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni post hoctest,and Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient. The results showed that the salivary cortisol concentration indicated an index of 1.97 ng/ml at the beginning of the match;40 minutes after that thesevalues increased to 8.00 ng/ml,and 60 minutesafter the match had started they reached 8.40 ng/ml. Considering the post-match moment, a moderate and positive correlation between the salivary cortisol concentration and heart rate (averageand maximum) wasseen. In conclusion,the physical effort expended during football Society practice needs to be monitored due to the high heart rate and high increase in the salivary cortisol concentrationofthis age group.

Introducción. El cortisol salival es una herramienta útil como biomarcador de estrés en pediatría, ya que la obtención de muestras no es invasiva. Hay escasa información sobre su uso en niños, y no se reportaron valores de referencia en lactantes sanos en la Argentina. Es importante establecerlos en cada centro como base para realizar estudios posteriores en lactantes, en quienes parece ser la herramienta objetiva más relevante en la actualidad para evaluar estrés. Objetivo. Determinar los valores de referencia de cortisol salival en lactantes sanos de 0 a 12 meses de edad. Métodos. Estudio descriptivo, de corte transversal, que evaluó cortisol salival matutino de niños sanos de ambos sexos de 0 a 12 meses que concurrieron a control de salud en el Hospital Pirovano entre marzo de 2017 y marzo de 2018. Se tomaron muestras de saliva de 8 a 9 a. m. en ayunas y se procesaron con electroquimioluminiscencia. Los resultados se informaron como media y desvío estándar. Resultados. Se incluyeron 140 niños, y se obtuvieron 96 muestras. La media de cortisol salival matutino fue 5,46 nmol/l (intervalo de confianza del 95 %: 4,66-6,38), desvío estándar 2,15. No se observó correlación con la variable edad, por lo cual el intervalo de referencia no requirió el fraccionamiento por grupo etario. No se observaron diferencias significativas respecto a sexo, edad gestacional, peso al nacer, tipo de parto o tipo de alimentación. Conclusión. Se informó el intervalo de referencia de cortisol salival matutino en lactantes sanos de 0 a 12 meses.


Introduction. Salivary cortisol is a useful tool as a biomarker of stress in pediatrics because it allows for non-invasive sampling. There is little information about its use in children, and no reference values for healthy infants have been reported in Argentina. Reference values should be established at each site as the basis for subsequent tests in infants, for whom salivary cortisol appears to be the most relevant objective tool to assess stress at present. Objective. To determine reference values for salivary cortisol in healthy infants aged 0-12 months. Methods. Descriptive, cross-sectional study that assessed morning salivary cortisol levels in healthy male and female infants aged 0-12 months that attended Hospital Pirovano for a health checkup between March 2017 and March 2018. Fasting saliva samples were collected between 8 and 9 a.m. and were processed using electrochemiluminescence. Results were reported as mean and standard deviation. Results. A total of 140 infants were included, and 96 samples were collected. Mean morning salivary cortisol levels were 5.46 nmol/L (95 % confidence interval: 4.66-6.38), standard deviation: 2.15. No correlation to age was observed, so it was not necessary to divide the reference range into age groups. No significant differences were observed in terms of sex, gestational age, birth weight, type of delivery or type of feeding. Conclusion. The reference range of morning salivary cortisol levels in healthy infants aged 0-12 months was reported.

@#Introduction: Salivary cortisol is used as an indicator of stress level and a recommended screening test for Cushing syndrome. The normal reference interval for salivary cortisol is dependent on the analytical methodology and the population studied and hence, establishment of a local population-based reference interval is recommended. Materials and methods: A total of 129 healthy blood donors and staffs of Penang General Hospital were recruited from June 2018-May 2019. Paired (morning and late-night) saliva samples were collected from individuals aged between 18 and 60 years old with no history of chronic medical illness. Salivary cortisol was assayed using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay technique. Non-parametric statistics were used for calculation of reference interval and 90% confidence intervals (90% CIs). Results: The reference interval for morning and latenight salivary cortisol was 2.09 – 22.63 nmol/L and <12.00 nmol/L, respectively. Conclusion: The locally-derived adult reference intervals for morning and late-night salivary cortisol concentration was determined and varied with previous studies emphasising the need in establishing individual laboratory reference interval.

INTRODUCTION@#Cushing's syndrome is defined as chronic excess free cortisol in circulation. According to recent studies, midnight salivary cortisol is an accurate and non-stress method for screening and diagnosing Cushing's syndrome. However, there is limited data on midnight salivary cortisol for diagnosing Cushing's syndrome in the Chinese population.@*METHODS@#Among 61 suspected Chinese patients, 48 patients were confirmed to have Cushing's syndrome. We evaluated the midnight salivary cortisol, midnight serum cortisol and 24-hour urine free cortisol excretion for diagnosis. Midnight salivary cortisol was collected from 21 healthy volunteers for control purposes.@*RESULTS@#In the patient group, mean urine free cortisol excretion and midnight salivary cortisol levels were 296.50 ± 47.99 µg/day and 10.18 ± 1.29 ng/mL, respectively. Among the control group and normal participants, mean midnight salivary cortisol level was 0.53 ± 0.13 ng/mL and 0.50 ± 0.12 ng/mL, respectively. The cut-off value for midnight salivary cortisol was 1.7 ng/mL for diagnosing Cushing's syndrome, with a sensitivity of 98% and specificity of 100%. The diagnostic performance of midnight salivary cortisol (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.99) was superior to that of urine free cortisol (AUC = 0.89).@*CONCLUSION@#Our study confirmed the good diagnostic performance of midnight salivary cortisol for diagnosing Cushing's syndrome in a Chinese population. Correlation between midnight salivary cortisol and either urine free cortisol or midnight serum cortisol was good. Midnight salivary cortisol is a convenient and precise tool for diagnosing Cushing's syndrome and can be the screening test of choice for Chinese populations.

Abstract Introduction Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common disorder that substantially decreases quality of life for both mother and child. In this longitudinal study, we investigated whether emotional memory, salivary cortisol (sCORT) or alpha-amylase during pregnancy predict postpartum depressive symptoms. Methods Forty-four pregnant women (14 euthymic women with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder [MDD] and 30 healthy women) between the ages of 19 and 37 years (mean age = 29.5±4.1 years) were longitudinally assessed in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy (12-22 weeks of gestational age) and again at 14-17 weeks postpartum. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Results Follow-ups were completed for 41 women (7% attrition). Postpartum EPDS scores were predicted by sCORT collected immediately after an incidental encoding memory task during pregnancy (b=-0.78, t -2.14, p=0.04). Postpartum EPDS scores were not predicted by positive (p=0.27) or negative (p=0.85) emotional memory. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that higher levels of sCORT during a memory encoding task in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy are associated with lower postpartum EPDS scores. While the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has long been associated with the neurobiology of MDD, the role of the HPA axis in perinatal depression deserves more attention.


Resumo Introdução A depressão pós-parto é um transtorno prevalente que afeta negativamente a qualidade de vida da mãe e da criança. Neste estudo longitudinal, nós investigamos se a memória emocional, o cortisol salivar (salivary cortisol, sCORT) ou alfa-amilase durante a gravidez predizem sintomas depressivos no período pós-parto. Métodos Um total de 44 mulheres grávidas [14 eutímicas com diagnóstico de transtorno depressivo maior (TDM) e 30 voluntárias sadias] entre 19 e 37 anos de idade (idade média = 29.5±4.1 anos) foram avaliadas longitudinalmente no 2° trimestre da gravidez (12-22 semanas de gestação) e na 1417ª semana pós-parto. Sintomas depressivos foram avaliados com a Escala de Depressão Pós-Natal de Edimburgo (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, EPDS). Resultados Quarenta e uma mulheres completaram o seguimento (7% de perda). sCORT coletado imediatamente antes de um teste de aquisição memória durante a gravidez foi preditor dos escores da escala EPDS no período pós-parto (b=-0.78, t -2.14, p=0.04). Memória emocional positiva (p=0.27) ou negativa (p=0.85) não foram preditores dos escores da escala EPDS no período pós-parto. Conclusão Os resultados deste estudo indicam que altos níveis de sCORT durante um teste de aquisição de memória no 2° trimestre da gravidez foram associados com baixos escores na escala EPDS no período pós-parto. Uma vez que o eixo hipotálamo-hipófise-adrenal (HHA) tenha sido envolvido na neurobiologia do TDM, o papel do eixo HHA na depressão perinatal merece mais atenção.

Introducción. Dada la dificultad en la interpretación de los valores de cortisol sérico en recién nacidos (RN), el objetivo de este estudio fue correlacionar los niveles basales de cortisol en el suero y la saliva, y describir las concentraciones de cortisol salival durante el primer mes de vida. Población y métodos. Estudio descriptivo, prospectivo, longitudinal y de correlación. Se seleccionaron RN de término del Servicio de Neonatología del Hospital Nacional Profesor Alejandro Posadas en 2014. En la saliva, se determinó cortisol; en la sangre, cortisol, globulina tansportadora de cortisol y albúmina. Se utilizó la correlación lineal para relacionar cortisol sérico y salival; el test de Friedman para comparar el cortisol durante el primer mes de vida y la diferencia para analizar el comportamiento de valores iguales o inferiores al primer cuartil. Resultados. Se evaluaron 55 RN. Cortisol sérico: 7,65 (1,0-18,1 gg/dl); cortisol salival: 35,88 (5,52107,64 nmol/L); globulina transportadora de cortisol: 22,07 (16,5-33,0 gg/µL), expresados como mediana y rango. El coeficiente de correlación entre el cortisol sérico y salival fue de 0,54; P= 0,001. El comportamiento del cortisol durante el primer mes de vida no mostró diferencias estadísticamente significativas y la diferencia entre la segunda y la primera muestra de valores iguales o inferiores al primer cuartil aumentó en 10 de 12 pacientes. Conclusión. La determinación de cortisol en la saliva refleja la concentración de cortisol sérico en RN normales. Algunos pacientes presentaron niveles bajos de cortisol a las 36 h de vida y mostraron una tendencia a incrementarse espontáneamente durante el primer mes de vida.


Introduction. Given that serum cortisol level interpretation in newborn infants (NBIs) is hard, the objective of this study was to correlate baseline salivary and serum cortisol levels and to describe salivary cortisol levels in the first month of life. Population and Methods. Descriptive, prospective, longitudinal, and correlational study. Term NBIs were selected from the Division of Neonatology of Hospital Nacional Profesor Alejandro Posadas in 2014. Cortisol was measured in saliva specimens while cortisol, cortisol-binding globulin, and albumin were measured in blood specimens. A linear correlation was performed to relate serum and salivary cortisol levels; Friedman test was conducted to compare cortisol levels during the first month of life, and the difference was used to analyze the performance of values equal to or lower than the first quartile. Results. Fifty-five NBIs were studied. Serum cortisol: 7.65 (1.0-18.1 gg/dL); salivary cortisol: 35.88 (5.52-107.64 mmol/L); cortisol-binding globulin: 22.07 (16.5-33.0 gg/µL), expressed as median and range. The correlation coefficient between serum and salivary cortisol was 0.54, P = 0.001. Cortisol performance during the first month of life showed no statistically significant differences, and the difference between the second and the first specimen of values equal to or lower than the first quartile increased in 10 out of 12 patients. Conclusion. The measurement of cortisol in saliva reflects serum cortisol levels in normal NBIs. Some patients had low levels of cortisol at 36 hours of life and showed a trend towards a spontaneous increase during the first month of life.

Desmama é uma fase crítica na vida do suíno devido a separação materna e a introdução de uma dieta seca. A termografia infravermelha medida na região ocular se mostra como um indicador confiável para a condição de estresse pontual de suínos. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a relação entre medidas de termografia infravermelha da superfície ocular e de cortisol em situações de estresse em leitões na pós desmama. Foram avaliados 66 leitões, uma vez por semana, durante sete semanas, em dois períodos do dia (7h e 15h) com medidas de temperatura superficial ocular, temperatura superficial do dorso e amostras de saliva para determinação de cortisol salivar. A análise estatística contemplou os efeitos fixos de semana e período do dia e sua interação e correlações de Pearson para relação entre termografia ocular, temperatura superficial e cortisol a 5% de significância. Cortisol salivar não diferiu entre os períodos, mas foi superior nas três primeiras semanas após o desmame (P<0,05). Nas duas primeiras semanas após a desmama o cortisol apresentou correlação alta e positiva (P<0,05) com a temperatura ocular máxima (0,89) e a temperatura superficial do dorso (0,80). As duas temperaturas superficiais apresentaram uma associação moderada positiva (r=0,41; P<0,0001) durante todo o período experimental. Este estudo destaca que a temperatura de superfície ocular obtida por meio da termografia infravermelha pode ser um indicador de temperatura de superfície corporal e estado de bem-estar de leitões em fase de creche, além de ser um método não invasivo e de rápida mensuração. Entretanto, mais pesquisas são necessárias para aprofundar a relação entre temperatura ocular e cortisol durante estresse crônico.(AU)


Weaning is a critical phase in pigs' life due to maternal separation and the introduction of a new diet. Infrared thermography measurement taken in the ocular region appears to be a reliable indicator of the stress condition of the pig. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ocular surface temperature by infrared thermography and cortisol in piglets post weaning. Sixty-six piglets were evaluated once a week, during 7 weeks, in two periods of the day (7am and 15pm) and ocular surface temperature and dorsal surface temperature were collected using a thermographic camera and a laser surface thermometer, respectively. Saliva was also collected to determine salivary cortisol. Statistical analysis included fixed effects of week and period of the day and their interaction, and relationship between thermography, dorsal surface temperature and cortisol were done by Pearson's correlations with 5% significance level. Salivary cortisol did not differ between periods, but it was higher in the first three weeks after weaning (P<0.05). During the first two weeks after weaning cortisol presented high and positive correlation (P<0.05) between ocular surface temperature (0.89) and dorsal surface temperature (0.80). The two superficial temperatures had a moderate and positive association (r=0.41; P<0.0001) during all experiment. This study highlights that the ocular surface temperature obtained through infrared thermography can be a superficial body temperature indicators, besides being a non-invasive and fast method of measurement. However, more research is needed to deepen the relationship between ocular surface temperature and cortisol during chronic stress.(AU)

Objective To explore the effect of psychological stress and salivary cortisol on the pregnancy outcome of pregnant women with preterm birth. Methods From January to September 2016, the convenience sampling method was adopted to select 138 pregnant woman with preterm preterm delivery of preterm preterm births in a class of grade 3 obstetrics and gynecology specialized hospitals. Among them, there were 86 pregnant women with preterm birth and 52 with full-term birth. The perceived stress scale ( PSS) combined with saliva cortisol testing to assess subjective and objective psychological stress of pregnant women, using multiple linear regression analysis the relationship of psychological pressure,salivary cortisol and preterm birth. Results The PSS score of 138 prenant woman was 21.5±8.1 with middle-high level. The PSS score of 86 pregnant women with preterm birth were higher those of 52 with full-term birth. The salivary cortisol levels of 8:00am, 16:00pm and 23:00pm in 86 pregnant women with preterm birth were respectively significantly higher than those of 52 with full-term birth (P<0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that high PSS score and short pregnant weeks with preterm birth were also risk factors for premature birth (all P<0.05). Conclusions High levels of psychological stress and short pregnant weeks are risk factors for premature birth. Health care workers can reduce the incidence of preterm labor by improving the mental state of pregnant women.

  Komono Town is a well-known spa and health resort in Mie Prefecture. Komono Town has been seeking ways to promote the activities of hot spring area and health resources in surrounding areas. As part of these efforts, Komono Town has developed town-walk programs to promote the health of local residents. In this study, focusing on effect of walking on relaxation, we compared levels of stress hormones and emotional scores obtained before and after walking.  After giving their informed consent, adult participated in two walking programs, each for a distance of approximately 7 km. Salivary cortisol levels were measured before and after intervention. In addition, the Mood Check List-Short form. 2 (MCL-S.2) and a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were used to rate emotions before and after intervention.  In both programs, walking tended to lower levels of salivary cortisol than resting. Low levels of cortisol, an adrenocortical hormone released during a state of predominantly sympathetic nervous activity, are thought to reflect mental relaxation; our result implies that the walking program enhanced relaxation in subjects. In addition, both MCL-S.2 and VAS rating showed that the subjects tended to feel better, more relaxed and less anxious after intervention.   These findings suggest that the walking programs are beneficial human body thorough, for example, enhanced relaxation.

El presente estudio evaluó si la escucha de música preferida por los participantes o la música relajante elegida por los investigadores previa al protocolo de estrés social modificado TSST (Trier Social Stress Test) afectaba el desempeño de las actividades realizadas durante el propio test, modulaba la respuesta de estrés que este induce, y en conjunto con el estresor, afectaba el desempeño en una tarea de atención en setenta y seis estudiantes universitarios asignados a uno de seis grupos: música relajante del investigador, música preferida por el participante y silencio, con o sin TSST Los resultados mostraron que la escucha de ambos tipos de música provocó una pendiente ascendente menos pronunciada en los niveles de cortisol en saliva luego del TSST, comparada con la que presentaron quienes no escucharon música, mientras que el aumento en la ansiedad-estado evaluada con el IDARE (Inventario de Ansiedad Rasgo-Estado) fue semejante en todos los grupos. No se encontraron diferencias debidas a la música en el desempeño de las tareas evaluadas. Se discute que la modulación de la escucha de música, independiente de la preferencia musical, tiene un efecto sobre la respuesta fisiológica de estrés posiblemente por la inducción de reacciones emocionales que esta provoca.


The present study examines the effects of listening to music selected by participants or relaxing music chosen by researchers before modified TSST (Trier Social Stress Test) on: 1) TSST tasks, 2) TSST-induced stress responses, and 3) one attention task with both music and TSST before it. Seventy six college students were randomly assigned to one of six groups: listening to relaxing music chosen by researchers, previously selected music by students, or silence, any of them with or without TSST Results showed that both relaxing or selected-by-participant music slowed salivary cortisol increase levels after TSST, whereas STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) increases were not significantly different. Listening to music has no significant effects on either TSST or attention tasks. Effects of listening to music on salivary cortisol levels due to possible emotional responses irrespective of music preference were discussed.

Abstract Exposure to high levels of cortisol and self-reported stress, as well as cognitive reserve, have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease pathology. However, there are no studies on the interaction of these variables. The present study aims to assess the associations of measures of cortisol, self-reported stress, and cognitive reserve with neuropsychological performance in healthy elderly people; besides, to test the interactions between these variables. Cross-sectional analyzes were conducted using data on stress, cognitive reserve and clinical conditions in 145 healthy elderly adults. A neuropsychological battery was used to assess executive functions, verbal memory and processing speed. Measurement of salivary cortisol at the circadian nadir was taken. A negative association between different stress measures and performance on tasks of memory, executive functions and processing speed was observed. Elderly people with higher cognitive reserve showed superior performance on all neuropsychological measures. No significant interaction between stress and cognitive reserve to neuropsychological performance was observed. These results indicate that older adults with high levels of stress and reduced cognitive reserve may be more susceptible to cognitive impairment.


Resumo A exposição a níveis elevados de cortisol e de estresse psicológico, assim como à reserva cognitiva, têm sido relacionadas a sintomas da Doença de Alzheimer. Contudo, não há estudos sobre a interação dessas variáveis. Objetivamos examinar as associações de medidas de cortisol e estresse psicológico e de reserva cognitiva com o desempenho neuropsicológico de idosos saudáveis, além de analisar a existência de interações entre essas variáveis. Análises transversais foram conduzidas usando dados sobre estresse, reserva cognitiva e condições clínicas em 145 idosos saudáveis. Usamos uma bateria neuropsicológica para medir as funções executivas, memória verbal e velocidade de processamento. Utilizamos uma medida de cortisol salivar para o nadir circadiano. Encontramos uma associação negativa entre diferentes medidas de estresse e o desempenho em tarefas de memória, funções executivas e velocidade de processamento. Idosos com elevada reserva cognitiva apresentaram um desempenho superior em todas as medidas neuropsicológicas. Não houve interação significativa entre estresse e Reserva Cognitiva para o desempenho neuropsicológico. Estes resultados sugerem que idosos com níveis elevados de estresse e reduzida reserva cognitiva podem ser mais suscetíveis ao comprometimento cognitivo.

Resumen Introducción: el Cortisol salival ha sido frecuentemente utilizado como un marcador de estrés. El cortisol tiene un importante ritmo diurno con elevaciones pico en las horas de madrugada, denominada respuesta del cortisol al despertar (RCD) con una caída durante el día. Los cambios al envejecer en el eje hipotálamo-pituitaria-adrenal (HPA) son contradictorios. Objetivo: este estudio examina la variación diurna de los niveles de cortisol salival en sujetos ancianos que viven en la comunidad. Diseño: estudio trasversal descriptivo. Medio: Poblacional. Participantes del estudio IMIAS (International Mobility in Aging Study). Participantes: cuatrocientos cincuenta personas mayores de 65 años, hombres y mujeres con una submuestra (100) para la toma de cortisol salival. Mediciones: los participantes recolectaron diez muestras de saliva, cinco por día, durante dos días así: al levantarse, 30 minutos (media hora) después de despertarse, una hora después de despertarse, en la tarde a las 3 pm y al acostarse. El cortisol fue evaluado mediante radioinmunoanálisis enzimático. Se evaluaron RCD, el área bajo la curva y la curva de patrón diurno. Resultados: se encontró una RCD amputada con un perfil diurno aplanado y con los niveles más bajos en la noche. El patrón de curva encontrado se considera como un patrón "normal" de ritmo circadiano de cortisol al envejecer, que se caracteriza por tener una baja RCD y con una caída lenta a través del día. Conclusiones: los ancianos muestran una menor respuesta del cortisol al despertar con un ritmo diurno reducido probablemente implicando una regulación alterada del eje HPA con el envejecimiento. Abstract Introduction: salivary cortisol has been frequently used as a marker of stress. Cortisol has an important diurnal rhythm with peak elevations at the dawn hours, called cortisol awakening response (CAR) with a drop during the day. Aging changes in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis are contradictory. Objective: this study examines the diurnal variation of salivary cortisol levels in elderly subjects living in the community. Design: a descriptive cross-sectional study. Medium: populational. Participants of IMIAS study (International Mobility in Aging Study). Participants: four hundred and fifty people over 65, men and women with a subsample (100) for the sampling of salivary cortisol. Measurements: participants collected ten saliva samples, five per day, for two days in this way: when getting up, 30 minutes (half an hour) after waking up, an hour after waking up, in the afternoon at 3 pm and at bedtime. Cortisol was assessed by enzyme radioimmunoassay. CAR, the area under the curve and the curve of diurnal pattern were evaluated. Results: an amputee CAR with a flattened diurnal profile and lower levels at night was found. Curve pattern found is considered a "normal" pattern of circadian rhythm of cortisol aging, characterized by having a low CAR and a slow fall throughout the day. Conclusions: The elderly have a lower cortisol response to awakening with a reduced diurnal rhythm probably involving an altered HPA axis regulation with aging. (Acta Med Colomb 2016; 41: 130-137).

Objective: Neck pain is a very common complaint in the general population. However, little is known about the characteristics of this complaint. The aim of this study was to clarify the psychological and physical characteristics of neck pain. Method: The subjects were 13 adult men with complaints of neck pain (NP group, mean age 20.2±0.7 years) and 10 healthy volunteers (CON group, mean age 21.2±1.5 years). This study used findings of neck tenderness and muscle stiffness for evaluation of neck pain, and employed the visual analog scale (VAS) to record the subjects’ assessment of their pain. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), MOS 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), VAS for evaluation of perceived stress, and measurements of salivary cortisol density levels were utilized to measure stress. The salivary cortisol density was measured by the enzyme immunity method of measurement (the ELISA method). In addition, saliva samples were collected between 9 AM to 10 AM. Results: The mean VAS score for neck pain in the NP group was 56.9±17.3. There was no significant difference in muscle stiffness between the groups. Tenderness of the upper trapezius fibers and right splenius capitis muscle were significantly higher in the NP group (p<0.05). The VAS score of perceived stress and the state anxiety of STAI were significantly higher in the NP group (p<0.05). The SF-36 score was significantly lower in the CON group (p<0.05). The trait anxiety of STAI and the salivary cortisol density were not significantly different. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the salivary cortisol density levels between the two groups. The degrees of perceived stress and uneasiness were reported as higher in the NP group, while the degrees of psychological and physical health were lower. These findings suggest the role of psychosociological factors in neck pain.
